Getting Ready To Peay
Arkansas hoops returns to action tomorrow night in the first round of the Jim Thorpe Classic here at Bud Walton Arena. The Razorbacks host the Governors of Austin Peay, and then will play against Stephen F. Austin on Saturday.
I would say Austin Peay is one of the more recognizable and popular small schools in the country. I for one cannot resist cheering for the Governors whenever they are on tv. I just like the "Let's Go Peay!" chant coming from the school's fans. That chant apparently came into popularity in the early 1970's during Austin Peay's first two NCAA tourney appearances.
The Governors, who won the Ohio Valley Conference last season, roll into town at 5-3 after losing at Louisville on Saturday. Peay actually led the Cardinals early in the second half. This will definitely be a good test for these young Razorbacks.
The Clarksville, Tennessee school named after popular Tennessee governor and Clarksville native Austin Peay, is coached by Dave Loos who is in his 18th season coaching the Governors and already in the school's hall of fame. The Governors start 2 seniors, 2 juniors, and a sophomore. The Peay boys won't be very big, but they'll be athletic. None of their starters is above 6'6, which includes the team's leading scorer and rebounder - 6'5" Drake Reed who is averaging 20 points and 7 boards a game.
The man with the name that gave a school life and inspired a legendary chant - Governor Austin Peay.
